sity.earth is a website created to share the hidden economic, labor, and environmental cost of our global waste system. Starting with trying to answer the simple question – where exactly is our waste going – has led to an unraveling of a convoluted answer. In this ongoing project, we hope to share our findings visually – what we as artists/designers do best – on sity.earth. In addition, sity.earth is a public resource to demystify confusing questions such as “Is this recyclable in my city?” Learn more about our mission statement.

Hi! Glad you’re curious about us! Our names are Richard and Deelia and we are both industrial design students at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

The underlying driving force for S’ity is to imagine a better future between humans, our surrounding organic communities and environment. Therefore we believe that the .earth top-level domain aligns better with our mission than the standard .com, which was originally for commercial purposes.

The idea of sity.earth began through chasing after the question “Where is the waste at RISD going to?” Through our research and talking to people in the waste industry, we have learned that there lacks a holistic understanding of the global waste system. Answers are fragmented and scattered in the global waste market with hidden powers and middlemen at play. A large part of our project has been piecing answers together to find the whole picture. We believe that the first step to tackling our waste problem is to understand and define all the factors in the system and to share it...hence a map!

America’s recycling system differs from city to city. That is why we decided to focus on our city for the first few versions of this site. We plan on adding other cities down the line.

Choose the least energy intensive route for your waste! Don’t forget that reduce comes before reuse and recycle! The greenest energy you use is the energy that you don’t use! Together we can reimagine a new way of living sustainably with nature. See how others are changing their ways of living below:

The project is too early in its development for us to accept contributors. For now, you may email us any suggestions and take a look at the project’s GitHub page. Once we are ready, we will publish our contributing guidelines and update the site accordingly.

Correct. We have many things planned for this project. What you see here is just the beginning, the “minimum viable product,” if you will. You can see what’s coming next in our development preview.
